Submission Guidelines

SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2010 AUSTRALIAN SHADOWS AWARD ARE NOW OPEN!

Eligibility

All entries must be works of fiction first published (in any form) within the calendar year of consideration (i.e. 2010 for the 2010 awards) and the author/editor must be an Australian, New Zealand, or Oceania citizen or resident.

The work must have horror/dark fiction content either as a focal point or an integral element of the work. The Awards Director has the discretion to rule ineligible any work based on genre (i.e. if the work is not dark/horrific enough).

Reading period: 1 June to 31 December.

Collaborations: Works co-written or co-edited by a non-Australian are eligible, but if the work is selected as a winner, the co-writer/co-editor will not receive a prize.

Categories

  • Short Fiction (short stories up to 25,000 words)
  • Long Fiction (novellas 25k words or over, novels, and single-author collections)
  • Edited Publication (anthologies or individual magazine issues dedicated to horror. Mixed genre magazine issues or anthologies are ineligible, although individual horror short stories appearing in a mixed genre publication are eligible in the Short Fiction category).

Please note that while a collection or anthology that contains reprints may be submitted as a work in its own right (in the Long Fiction or Edited Publication categories), none of the reprinted stories within will be eligible for individual consideration. Anthologies or collections that contain only reprints (i.e. no new, original work) are ineligible.

Entering Works

There are no submission forms to fill in and no entry fees. Anyone - including judges - may suggest a work for consideration by passing on the details of the work to the Awards Director (Shane Jiraiya Cummings), who will then contact the author or publisher to ensure review copies reach the judges.

Entries of less than 25,000 words may be emailed as attachments in electronic format (PDF preferred) to the Director, who will then forward the work(s) to the Judging Panel. All electronically submitted entries must include the publication venue and year of publication.

Please contact the Director via email to obtain instructions for submitting books and hard copies of short stories.
