Vivienne Read
Vivienne Read is a mid-thirties single mother of one young adult and one grumpy teenager. She lives on WA's Midwest Coast and works mostly in sexual health policy and sex/gender politics. Writing in third person makes her feel like a pretentious twat, so she's going to cease and desist immediately.
I've always loved to write and over the years have had countless pieces printed, published, stolen, reappropriated, awarded, fawned over and publicly condemned. Unfortunately, due to the personal nature of much of the content, I've mostly written anonymously or under fake names, so my ‘official' bibliography is somewhat underdeveloped. Ok, non-existent.
I won an Advance Australia Award for literature when I was 15 years old, which is entirely irrelevant considering it happened half a lifetime ago, but it still makes me feel good to say it. So there. I've also written a couple of full-length novels (haven't we all?) but they're still hiding in my computer and I have no real plans to ever let them out.
More recently I had a regular column in Black Magazine, called ‘Shades of Grey'. The Brimstone crew were also kind enough to give me a Horrorscope reviewing gig, but for the past few months I've been too busy to stop and scratch my bum, let alone read an entire book. Oh, and I won the 'Writing in a Pinch' short story competition at Swancon last year. Not exactly worldwide critical acclaim, but a warm fuzzy feeling inside, nonetheless.
I lean more towards the psychological thriller than the blood and gore side of horror, but I'm not averse to (writing) the occasional bit of slasher porn. I'm currently experimenting with flash fiction, because I love the challenge of cramming an entire story into so few words. I'm also a compulsive waffler with a short attention span, prone to wandering off on tangents, so the smaller word-count really helps to rein me in and keep me focused.
My location makes it difficult to attend networking events and meet other writers, so don't be afraid to hit me up for a chat and a virtual coldie if you see me online. Cum play wiv me. I haz no frenz.
